Kenilworth’s modern development began in the late 1890s when the New Orange Industrial Association purchased farmland in portions of Cranford and Union, dividing it into building lots promoted with illustrations of parks, lakes, and cultural venues—many of which existed only in concept. The Association attracted several industries and even lured Upsala College from Brooklyn with free land. Because “New Orange” was often confused with the Essex County Oranges, the community adopted the name Kenilworth when it became a borough in 1907. Earlier history traces back to the 1600s, when Dutch and English settlers arrived following the English takeover of New Amsterdam in 1664.
