History of Belleville, NJ

Belleville, located in Essex County, was originally known as “Second River” or “Washington” and was settled by Dutch colonists who moved outward from what is now Jersey City (then called Bergen). The area developed as a mix of agriculture, housing, and early industry, helped by its position between the Passaic River and the Second River, which provided crucial water power and access for transporting coal and supplies by boat.
